Massage – a century-old tradition

Massage means “touching”. A massage involves pulling, pressing and stretching of the body to stimulate the skin, muscles and connective tissues. But more than that, it also lets your soul wander. Massage is a therapy that affects the body locally but also involves the entire organism and loosens up emotional and physical blockades. This soothing manipulation harmonizes the spirit and the body.

Origin

Massage is one of the oldest treatment methods in the world. Chinese writings dated 2600 BC already described massage techniques, and early descriptions of massages with essential oils and herbs can be found in Indian medicine. The Greek doctors Hippocrates (460-375 BC) and Galenos (129-199 AD) used massages to cure ailments and contributed to their spread throughout Europe. In the Middle-Ages, massage methods were somewhat forgotten. It is only in the 16th century that French surgeon Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) once again used massages as a means of rehabilitation and pain relief and thus reminded humanity of massage treatments.

The Swedish masseur Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839) is one of the contemporary fathers of the widespread techniques of classic massage in the Western world. This is why classic massage is also called Swedish massage.

During the second half of the 20th century, several other forms of massage were developed, such as reflex zone or cup massage. Classic massage is the most frequently used form of manual relaxation and therapy.
